Pitfalls to Avoid in Current Special Educational Trends
Current trends in special education reject the traditional psychological evaluation to determine if a student has a learning disability. The new fad for determination is the Three Tiered Model. Unfortunately those who are pushing this idea are not simultaneously requiring an overhaul of our nation's teacher education requirements, thus creating frustration for all.
Thankfully in private education we can run our programs in a way that is practical and helpful for us. The best method for determination of a learning disability is still a psychological evaluation which can be obtained through the public school psychologist or through a private tester. Private testing is expedient but costly although many insurances will cover this cost if you get a referral from your primary care physician. Public school testing (same battery of tests as that of private testing) is free, but may take months to complete.
Please email me if you have any other questions about the referral process.
